Credit Courses

  • PennAdvance
    Distance learning opportunities for qualified students to earn credit for Penn courses through their home computer. Class sessions include live lecture and discussion delivered with real-time video and chat.
  • Penn Summer Abroad
    Embark on an intellectual and cultural journey while earning college credit with one of Penn's outstanding summer abroad programs.
  • Penn Summer Sessions
    Summer courses at Penn are offered by the School of Arts and Sciences, the Graduate School of Education, the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, the School of Design, the School of Nursing, the Annenberg School for Communication, the School of Social Practice and Policy, and the Wharton School. Regular undergraduate and graduate courses are open to qualified visiting students.
  • Summer Institute in Business and Technology (SIBT)
    Four-week program for undergraduates enrolled full-time in universities abroad and international students studying full-time in the U.S.. Program offers two courses, corporate site visits, guest lectures and optional communication coaching (in English).

Non-Credit Courses and Lecture Series

  • English as a Second Language
    Improve your communication skills for business, prepare to enter a university in the US, learn about US society and culture, or increase your general level of English in any skill area. Study full-time, part-time, or online.
  • Leadership Alliance Summer Research Early Identification Program (SR-EIP) - for underserved and underrepresented students, offers undergraduates the opportunity to work for eight to ten weeks under the guidance of a faculty or research mentor at University of Pennsylvania or 18 other participating Alliance institutions.
  • Professional Development
    To succeed in today's competitive environment, professionals need to continually sharpen their skills. Penn offers a variety of certificate programs, including Executive Administration, Program Management, and Fundraising, that are designed to provide you with the strategies and savoir-faire you need to succeed.
  • Undergraduate Student Scholars Program

    Program in the NIH Center for Molecular Studies in Digestive and Liver Diseases at the University of Pennsylvania, an organized program of summer lectures and presentations combined with basic research experience in the laboratory of an expert investigator. Program open to students from Penn as well as outside of the University. Curriculum designed specifically for undergraduate students with an interest in biomedical research, with the eventual goal of MD, PhD, or MD-PhD degrees.   • Undergraduate Summer Workshop in Cognitive Science - For undergraduate students interested in learning about the growing fields of cognitive science and cognitive neuroscience. Sponsored by the Institute for Research in Cognitive Science at the University of Pennsylvania.

Internships, Grants, Fellowships

  • Trustees' Council of Penn Women Summer Research Award provides summer research stipends to female faculty, or faculty members whose research is centrally concerned with the role of women in society, science or arts and letters. For details contact The Alice Paul Center for Research on Women, Gender, and Sexuality..
  • Biomedical Summer Undergraduate Internship Program
    Gain ten weeks of hands-on experience in a biomedical laboratory by working with Penn researchers and graduate students. Interns collaborate with faculty and graduate students in ongoing research, participate in seminars, and receive career counseling and guidance.
  • The Laboratory for Research on the Structure of Matter (LRSM) Summer Research Fellowships for undergraduates from colleges and universities in the United States who are majoring in science or engineering. Interns work under the supervision of a faculty member on a current materials research project in chemistry, physics, biochemistry, biophysics, materials science or engineering.   • GAPSA-Provost's Award for Interdisciplinary Innovation -- a competitive program for graduate and professional student-conceived interdisciplinary projects that includes an awarded fellowship and the identification of collaborative scholars. Award will enable graduate and professional students to integrate knowledge across academic disciplines in a summer project.
  • SUNFEST - Summer UNdergraduate FEllowship in Sensor Technologies.  A unique program that provides talented undergraduate students with hands-on research during the summer in the area of sensor technologies. Open to students in engineering and the physical sciences, this program seeks to expose students to real, in-depth research in the area of sensor technology and to motivate them to go on to graduate school. Sponsored by the National Science Foundation as a REU Site (Research Experience for Undergraduates) and the Center for Sensor Technologies at the University of Pennsylvania.   • Medical Genetics Summer Research Program
    The program is ten weeks running June 5 through August 11.  Program provides full-time internships in basic laboratory research related to gene therapy of cystic fibrosis, other genetic diseases, and cancer.

Programs for High School Students and Youth

Penn's Summer Youth Programs are designed for academically gifted high school students.

  • Leadership in the Business World (LBW)
    Sponsored by The Wharton School, this program enables rising high school seniors to learn about leadership in the 21st century and provides participants with insight into the future of the business world.
  • Management & Technology Summer Institute 2008 (M&TSI) A credit program for rising seniors interested in the integration of technical innovation and management principles. Features leading faculty, entrepreneurs, lab experience, trips to R&D facilities and other activities.
  • Penn Summer Studios:  Art and Architecture
    This is a rigorous four-week, non-credit program consisting of intensive study in one of the following concentrations:  animation, architecture, filmmaking, drawing and painting, sculpture, and photography. 
  • Summer Institute in Business & Technology
    The Summer Institute in Business and Technology (SIBT) is a four-week program for globally-minded undergraduates enrolled full-time in universities abroad, as well as in the U.S. The program offers 6 full semester hours of credit, site visits to companies, visits from corporate representatives, guest lectures, optional coaching on improving oral and written communication (in English), and co-curricular activities designed to enhance the overall experience of the visiting students. Wharton and Engineering undergraduates serve as Residential/Teaching Advisors (RTAs); they live with the international students on campus and provide a resource for academic and co-curricular activities.
  • Pre-College Program
    Talented high school juniors and seniors earn college credit taking arts and sciences and engineering classes with regular undergraduates. Participants experience the demands of college coursework and can choose to live on campus or commute.
  • Summer Academy in Applied Science and Technology (SAAST)
    Experience for-credit, college-level coursework at Penn Engineering that combines sophisticated theory with hands-on experience in cutting edge technologies. Choose one of six high-tech courses: Biotechnlogy, Computer Graphics, Computer Programming, Nanotechnology, Robotics, and Technology and Democracy.
  • Talent Search Program - For students 6th through 12th grade from the Philadelphia school district. Provides students and their parents with exposure to the college preparatory culture. Only students at Overbrook High School, Beeber Middle School, or Shoemaker Middle School are eligible for this program. For details contact Kenneth Perry.
